Camwood also known as Osun (phonetically spelled “o-soon”), is not to be confused with the Yoruba deity Osun or Òsún.  Osun is typically red camwood although camwood can also be black in which case it is called dudu osun and used as a soap. Camwood is also known as African sandle wood which is a shrubbery hard wooded tree. It can be used as a semi- permanent dye or for decoration. The red pigment is used in initiations to the different Orisha houses where the dye can be used in painting different sacred symbols. It is also used as Ifa medicines for spiritual and physical healing because it is said to have healing and antiseptic qualities and Africans have used it for medicinal and skincare purposes for centuries.
